What are the main differences between a veterinary assistant and a veterinary technician?
Both veterinary assistants and technicians play important roles in animal care, but there are some differences in their job duties and responsibilities.
Veterinary assistants typically provide support to the veterinary technicians and veterinarians. They may help with tasks such as holding animals for exams or procedures, cleaning and maintaining equipment and facilities, and providing basic care such as feeding and exercising animals.
Veterinary technicians, on the other hand, have more advanced training and certification. There is a myriad of fundamental skills veterinary assistants should have. As a DVM's right-hand person, veterinary assistants play a critical role in any successful veterinary practice. And while nimble fingers are a huge plus, the most essential skills a veterinary assistant can have is humility, reliability, and a strong work ethic.
